You know it – bowie, ‘Rambo’ knife, butterfly knife, and dozens of other. Mostly connected with criminals, but sometimes embraced as a self defence weapon of choice. Is it really so?
I will provide you an answer immediately – no. Knife is a great weapon, one of the first (along with spear) weapons made by a human, still crucial part of every soldier’s armament, even in the times of laser guided munition and UAVs. But using a knife as a personal self defence weapon is not very clever.
The main reason for this is knife’s high lethality, but low ability to stop an enemy. In other words – knife injuries are lagging in terms of incapacitation. Attacker can be hit with several (deadly hits) but he can continue his attack for several minutes more, until bleeding finally reaches the limit.
Even a minor injury (hands) can result in serious disability (cut nerves, ligaments). Therefore knife self-defence acts often result in legal actions and serious charges for the defender. You injure/kill the enemy, but you don’t stop him from doing what yo don’t want him to do – harming you!
Soldiers use knife as a tool, or to kill from blank point. Naturally, hear, neck or head hit will stop the enemy instantly. But it requires highly skilled fighter, and let’s admit it – we don’t want to kill people with knife on the streets, even when they are ‘bed’!
